A leak does not necessarily mean you need to replace your roof. If your roof is still in good shape, repairing the leak should fix your problem. If the roof is in poor shape, than having the leak repaired could cause more damage/problems than it is solving. In this instance, replacing the roof might be the best option for you.
Our company works exclusively with Owens Corning products as they are the best shingles on the market. We have chosen this brand of shingle because of the SureNail strip with a 1-inch nailing zone; the wide adhesive bands engineered for 130 MPH winds; and the variety of colours the shingles come in.
No, it is not recommended to put new shingles over old ones. After the old shingles are removed the roofer should be inspecting your roof deck for any rot. If rot is found new plywood would need to be installed, as it is unsafe to have rot on your roof deck. If shingles were being laid on top of old ones, this needed step could not be taken.
It is best to have 6ft of ice and water shield at the base of your roof and synthetic felt paper to the remainder. Companies offer different options for underlayment, but in most instances 100% ice and water shield is not recommended (NOTE: this can be an unnecessary extra cost for homeowners).

To do a proper inspection to provide a quote for services, the roofing company needs to get physically on your roof to complete an inspection. If not, you may be receiving a quote for services that are beyond or not what you need.
Proper home protection
For any roofing work, the roofing company should be protecting your plants, walkways, decks, etc with tarps and plywood. This allows for easy clean-up and for no evidence of roofing work to be left behind for children or animals to find.
Providing instructions for roofing work
In advance of any roofing work, your roofing company should let you know how to prepare for their arrival to ensure your homes safety. For example, vehicles should be out of the driveway and fragile lawn furniture put away.
Explanation of services
Before commencing any work, your roofing company should explain to you the services that will be completed and why you need them.
If something doesn’t make sense to you, it might be because you don’t need it.
Using proper underlayment and ice and water shield
All roofs need underlayment and a minimum of 6ft of ice and water shield, sometimes more depending on the roof slope.
All roofing companies should include this as part of their installation.
Providing proper ventilation for your home
Many homes do not have a proper ventilation. A roofing company should be able to advise you on the amount and size of vents needed to properly ventilate your home. To do so, the soffit is checked to make sure they aren’t blocked when roof is being installed.
